    President Bhutto of Pakistan publicly apologised to West Germany on Friday (15 September) for the behaviour of the World Champion Pakistani hockey team at the Munich Olympics the previous Sunday.

    After the hockey final, which Pakistan lost to West Germany 1 -0, angry Pakistani fans overran the pitch and tried to attack the umpires. Then the eleven Pakistani players showed reluctance to mount the podium to receive their silver medals...and had to be persuaded to face the West German flag during the playing of the anthem.

    Because of the incident, Pakistan's Hockey Federation has been suspended from all international activities for at least four years, and the players banned from Olympic participation for life.

    Speaking to an assembly of 2,000 West German businessmen in Karachi, President Bhutto had this to say about his homeward-bound hockey players:-
    SYNOPSIS: At a gathering of West German businessmen in Karachi, Pakistan's President Bhutto apologises for the behaviour of his country's hockey team at the Munich Olympics.
