  • Description

BRITISH FREELANCE JOURNALIST NORMAN BARRYMAINE, RELEASED ON SATURDAY (OCTOBER 11) BY THE CHINESE AUTHORITIES, DESCRIBED HIS 19 MONTHS IN A SHANGHAI JAIL AS A DISTINCTLY UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE. SIXTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD MR. BARRYMAINE, WHO DENIED THAT HE WAS VISITING CHINA AS A SPY, TOLD A HONG KONG PRESS CONFERENCE YESTERDAY (MONDAY) THAT DESPITE THE UNPLEASANT PRISON CONDITIONS HE HAS BEEN GRANTED EVERY MEDIAL CARE BY THE CHINESE.

SINCE HIS RELEASE, MR. BARRYMAINE HAS SAID THAT CHINESE AUTHORITIES INTERROGATED HIM FOR SEVERAL DAYS AFTER HE WAS TAKEN OFF A POLISH SHIP IN SHANGHAI IN FEBRUARY LAST YEAR.

HE WAS FINALLY CHARGED WITH ESPIONAGE -- THOUGH NO MENTION WAS MADE OF ANY SPECIFIC ACT OF SPYING -- BUT WAS NEVER BROUGHT TO TRIAL. HE HAD THEN BEEN IMPRISONED IN A BARE CELL MEASURING 8 FEET BY 12 FEET (2.4 BY 3.6 METRES).

MR. BARRYMAINE LEFT HIS BED IN A HONG KONG HOSPITAL IN ORDER TO GIVE THE TWO-HOUR PRESS CONFERENCE:
