Background: A second-half goal from England striker Martin Chivers was enough to give Tottenham Hotspur victory in their London Derby away to West Ham, on Saturday (8 September).

Both teams, renowned for their attractive football, have been struggling to find their form this season. And the opening stages of this match did not reveal much promise.

The Spurs defence made frequent use of the off-side trap, which although effective is not entertaining. Only West Ham and England captain Bobby Moore, and mid-field player Trevor Brooking, turned in performances to encourage the home side. For Spurs, their captain Martin Peters and mid-field players Ralph Coates impressed.

At half-time the score was 0-0 with neither team looking very threatening, but in the second half Spurs almost had the ball in the net, on both occasions Gilzean set up good chances for Peters, but the Spurs captain was unable to find the net. Then in the 65th minute Spurs scored. It was Gilzean once again who made the goal. From a Jennings clearance he pushed a square pass through to Chivers who rounded West Ham defender Taylor and hit a hard left foot shot just inside the post.

Spurs deserved their lead and in fact before the final whistle had several more chances. West Ham are still waiting for their first win.
