    SWAZILAND'S FIRST ELECTED LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OPENED IN THE CAPITAL, MBABANE, YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). ALL THE SEATS IN THE NEW COUNCIL, BOTH WHITE AND NON-WHITE, WERE WON BY THE SUPPORTERS OF PARAMOUNT CHIEF SOBHUZA 11 WHO HAD CONSISTENTLY OPPOSED THE NEW CONSTITUTION, IMPOSED BY BRITAIN, UNDER WHICH THE ELECTIONS WERE HELD.

    AS A RESULT A DEMONSTRATION WAS HELD AT THE OPENING BY SUPPORTERS OF THE UNITED FRONT OF AFRICAN NATIONALIST PARTIES. THE DEMONSTRATORS DEMANDED AN END TO BRITISH RULE IN THE PROTECTORATE, WHICH BORDERS SOUTH AFRICA.

    THE DEMONSTRATION WAS LED BY DOMISA DHLAMINI, GENERAL-SECRETARY OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, ONE OF THE LEADING OPPOSITION PARTIES.

    THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL MET UNDER THE BRITISH RESIDENT COMMISSIONER, MR. FRANK LLOYD IN THE HIGH COURT BUILDING. BEFORE THE OPENING OF THE COUNCIL, MR. LLOYD INSPECTED A GUARD OF HONOUR AND TOOK THE SALUTE.

    AT THE COUNCIL, THE NEW MEMBERS HEARD ONE OF PARAMOUNT CHIEF SOBHUZA'S SONS -- THE CHIEF IS ILL -- READ THE OPENING ADDRESS. HE SAID THAT IT WAS THE WILL OF THE SWAZIS TO BE INDEPENDENT, WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH, AND THE PRESENT CONSTITUTION WOULD BE USED AS A VEHICLE TO REACH THAT GOAL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
