    ABOUT 1,000 PEOPLE TOOK TO THE STREETS IN PENANG LATE LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY) TO PROTEST AT THE DEVALUATION OF THE OLD MALAYAN CURRENCY. YESTERDAY ANXIOUS CROWDS ALSO LINED UP OUTSIDE PENANG BANKS FOR THE FIRST DAY OF TRADING SINCE BRITAIN ANNOUNCED THE STERLING DEVALUATION.

    THERE ARE NOW TWO DIFFERENT CURRENCIES OF VARYING VALUE CIRCULATING IN MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE AND BRUNEI.

    THE NEW MALAYSIAN, SINGAPORE AND BRUNEI DOLLAR, FIRST ISSUED LAST JUNE, REMAINS UNCHANGED IN VALUE. BUT MORE THAN 600 MILLION DOLLARS OF OLD CURRENCY ARE STILL LEGAL TENDER, AND ARE ALSO AUTOMATICALLY DEVALUED AS A RESULT OF THE BRITISH ACTION.

    THE GOVERNOR OF THE BANK NEGARA IN PENANG, SAID HE EXPECTED THERE WOULD BE A GREAT DEAL OF CONFUSION THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

    POLICE WERE ON HAND TO CONTROL THE CROWDS OUTSIDE BANK NEGARA YESTERDAY.
