  • Description

As cold winter storms sweep across the Eastern half of the United States from Texas to Massachussetts, one of the areas hardest hit by blizzards was the Midwest--and road chaos ensued yesterday (Wednesday) on highways and in the streets of Michigan and Illinois.

Near Grand Rapids, in Michigan, heavy snowdrifts on the motorways caused many accidents--including several involving traffic wreckers on their way to rescue stalled and crashed cars.

Meanwhile, the cities were not spared--and in Chicago, pedestrians had to brave sleeting snow in temperatures as low as 55 degrees below zero. Winds reached speeds as high as 65 miles per hour (104 kilometres p.h.) blowing snow into road-clogging drifts which cut visibility to zero. Twenty-one deaths were confirmed along the swath of the storm--the majority of them in the Midwest, and many more predicted before the storms are expected to run their course.
