Background: President Gursel of Turkey, presented diplomas to military cadets at Istanbul's military academy. Aug 2, At the ceremony were 66 army officers, 16 air force officers and 16 naval officers, including 8 Persian and 3 Afghan officers.
Attending the presentation were several high ranking officers of the Turkish military Government, headed by General Gursel.
On Aug 3, the Turkish defence department "retired" 235 generals and admirals. The entire structure of the country's military forces is being reviewed in an attempt to reduce top heavy numbers of high ranking officers and produce a more compact defence group.
