By a unanimous vote, the United Nations Security Council on Friday (21 July) called on Israel to release without delay the six Syrian and Lebanese officers abducted by an Israeli patrol which penetrate into Lebanese territory on 21st June.

The resolution -- jointly sponsored by Guinea, India, Somalia, Sudan and Yugoslavia -- also deplored Israel's lack of response to a previous call for the return of the captives made by the Council on 26th June.

The United States abstained in the voting, and Israel has refused to take part in the debate since it began on tuesday (18th July) and resumed on Thursday (20th July), on the grounds that the Council had refused to put forward a parallel Israeli resolution calling for an exchange of prisoners.
