A major oil strike in the western desert of the U.A.R. has given rise to hopes that Egypt may soon join the band of middle east oil suppliers. The Egyptian Minister of Industry and Petroleum, Mr. Aziz Sidky travelled to the Abu Gharadik area yesterday to inspect an oil well which is producing some 4,000 barrels a day. The find may prove to be one of the biggest oil discoveries in the Western Desert.
SYNOPSIS: A major oil discovery has been in the Western Desert of the U.A.R. The Egyptian Minister of Industry and Petroleum, Mr. Aziz Sidky visited the oil rig.
The rig is currently producing some 4,000 barrels of oil a day. Present indications are that it can produce more. Drilling is currently to a depth of some 9,100 feet.
Test show that there's an even more productive oil deposit some 500 feet below the present level. Tests and exploratory drillings are still being carried out.
Its only in recent years that Egypt has looked to the Western Desert for its oil. Extensive surveys have been carried out and preliminary drilling undertaken. The country hopes that within a few years it will be able to join the major oil producing countries of the Middle East.
