  • Description

WITH SO MANY REFUGEES, MOSTLY CZECHS, ASKING FOR ASYLUM AT THE REFUGEE CAMP AT TRAISKIRCHEN, NEAR VIENNA, THE CAMP IS RUNNING INTO ACCOMMODATION DIFFICULTIES, AND PART OF THE CAMP IS TO BE MOVED TO OTHER QUARTERS NEARBY IN LOWER AUSTRIA.

THIS YEAR ALONE 6,000 REFUGEES HAVE ASKED FOR ASYLUM AT THE CAMP, WHICH WAS SET UP BY THE AUSTRIAN GOVERNMENT IN 1968 AT A COST OF 40,000,000 SCHILLINGS (ABOUT GBP640,000 STERLING).

OF THE 2,900 REFUGEES IN THE CAMP, 1,800 ARE CZECHS, WITH THE NEXT LARGEST GROUP YUGOSLAVS. SEVERAL HAVE BROUGHT THEIR CARS WITH THEM.

MANY OF THE REFUGEES PLAN TO EMIGRATE TO OTHER COUNTRIES IF THEY ARE ACCEPTED -- SWITZERLAND, GERMANY, THE UNITED STATES, AUSTRALIA, CANADA, AND SOUTH AFRICA. AFTER THE WARSAW PACT INTERVENTION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA LAST YEAR, SWITZERLAND TOOK 10,000 CZECHS AND CANADA 7,000 WHILE OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES TOOK ANOTHER 7,000.

LAST MONTH (JULY), 111,000 CZECHS ENTERED AUSTRIA AS TOURISTS. SO FAR ONLY 70,000 HAVE RETURNED. IT IS FELT THAT MANY ARE WAITING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA AFTER THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE WARSAW PACT INTERVENTION ON 21 AUGUST.

THE GOVERNMENT OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA HAS MEANWHILE ANNOUNCED 15 SEPTEMBER AS THE DEADLINE FOR ITS AMNESTY FOR TOURISTS WHO HAVE STAYED ABOARD BEYOND THEIR TIME.
