An Elburgon (Kenya) farmer was murdered yesterday 50 yards from the front door of his home. Police found the body of 59 year old Mr. Edward Gray, lying across a garden path at 4 a.m. He had been slashed across the back of the neck.
A senior police official said that no motive to the murder had been established. Mr. Gray was last seen alive by his wife at 8pm on Tuesday. He left the house at that time and when he had not returned at 3.a.m., his wife telephoned the police who searched the garden and found his body.
Police dogs were used in an attempt to trace the murderer. They followed tracks for a mile before losing the scent in a sunflower 'shamba'.
Mr. Gray was born in South Africa. He moved to Kenya about 20 years ago and was for many years employed by Estates and Investments Ltd at Kitale.
