  • Description

A FULL SCALE ENQUIRY HAS BEEN ORDERED INTO YESTERDAY'S GAS EXPLOSION IN OSAKA, JAPAN, WHICH CLAIMED MORE THAN 70 LIVES. IT WAS THE WORST EXPLOSION OF ITS KIND IN JAPANESE HISTORY.

IRONICALLY THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED ONLY HOURS AFTER THE JAPANESE PARLIAMENT HAS PASSED A BILL TO STRENGTHEN THE SAFETY OF GAS IN CITIES.

OSAKA USES A 50-50 MIXTURE OF PETROLEUM AND COAL GAS IN ITS SUPPLY.

DISASTER STRUCK WHILE JAPAN WAS SHOWING OFF HER POST-WAR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AT EXPO-70.....ONLY 7 MILES ( 12 KMS ) FROM THE SCENE OF THE DISASTER. IT OCCURRED BENEATH A DENSELY POPULATED AREA WHERE CONSTRUCTION MEN WERE WORKING ON A NEW UNDERGROUND RAILWAY.

THE BLAST RIPPED AWAY HEAVY STEEL AND CONCRETE SLABS, TORE OFF ROOF TILES AND FLATTENED PASSERS-BY. AN AREA OF OVER 2,000 YARDS WAS AFFECTED. WINDOW PANES FLEW INTO THE AIR AND FIRE QUICKLY SPREAD THROUGH THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS.

AMBULANCES FERRIED THE DEAD AND DYING TO OVERCROWDED HOSPITALS.

PRIME MINISTER SATO HAS ORDERED TWO OF HIS CABINET MINISTERS TO FLY TO THE SCENE OF THE DISASTER AND BEGIN A PRELIMINARY ENQUIRY.
