  • Description

COMPANIES OF BRITISH PARATROOPERS AND ROYAL MARINE COMMANDOS ON TUESDAY HAD WHAT'S DESCRIBED AS THEIR "TOUGHEST ENCOUNTER" WITH ENEMY TRIBESMEN IN THE RADFAN MOUNTAINS OF THE SOUTH ARABIAN FEDERATION. THEY PENETRATED THREE MILES DOWN THE WINDING WADI DHUBSAN, WHERE NO EUROPEAN HAD EVER STEPPED BEFORE. IN THIS ASSAULT AGAINST THE "RED WOLVES OF RADFAN" ONE SOLDIER WAS KILLED AND SEVEN WOUNDED.

DURING TUESDAY'S ENCOUNTER TROOPS RAIDED THE HOME OF A LEADER OF THE "RED WOLF" TRIBESMEN, SHEIKH LABOUZA, BUT FOUND HE HAD FLED. THE SHEIKH'S TRIBE IS NAMED AS ONE OF THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENCOURAGING WEAKER NEIGHBOURS INTO TAKING PART IN THE FIGHTING.

THE BRITISH MIDDLE EAST COMMAND SAID THE WADI DHUBSAN OPERATION WAS PART OF AN OVERALL PLAN AIMED AT SUBDUING ENEMY TRIBESMEN BY KEEPING THEM ON THE MOVE. FIVE BRITISH SOLDIERS HAVE BEEN KILLED AND 23 WOUNDED SINCE OPERATIONS BEGAN A MONTH AGO. ENEMY DEAD HAS BEEN PUT AT ABOUT 50.
