Background: In Jordan, preparations are well advanced for the election of the Council of the Arab National Union.....the country's only legal political organisation.
Two-hundred-and-forty members will be elected and a further 120 will be appointed by King Hussein.
The first elections will take place on August the 30th in the north of Jordan. Other areas will vote later.
Political parties were banned in Jordan before the general election in 1963. In September 1971, King Hussein announced the formation of a Jordanian National Union. It's name was changed in March this year to the Arab National Union. It is the only political organisation allowed and represents both East and West Banks. Communists, Marxists and advocates of other "imported ideologies" are not allowed membership.
SYNOPSIS: Inside, union officials and workers have been preparing for the election of a new Council of the organisation. The election will be staggered throughout the country, with the first stage being held on August the thirtieth in the northern Governorate of Irbed. Amman will vote on September the fourth and other districts will follow later.
