    THE TRIAL HAS BEGUN IN CAIRO, UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC OF A FORMER MINISTER, AMIN MOHAMED AHMED SOUKA, CHARGED WITH COMMUNICATING STATE SECRETS TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY IN TIME OF WAR. SOUKA, AT ONE TIME A MINISTER PLENIPOTENTIARY AT THE FOREIGN MINISTRY, HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF GIVING SECRETS TO A DIPLOMAT AT A FOREIGN EMBASSY.

    SOUKA WAS ORIGINALLY TO APPEAR IN OPEN COURT, BUT AFTER THE INDICTMENT WAS READ, THE STATE PROSECUTOR REQUESTED A SECRET TRIAL "IN VIEW OF THE IMPORTANT SECRETS" CLAIMED TO BE INVOLVED.

    THE TRIAL, WHICH OPENED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), IS THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF ESPIONAGE AND SUBVERSION TRIALS DUE TO BEGIN SOON.

    SOUKA, NOW RETIRED FROM THE FOREIGN MINISTRY ON PENSION; WAS SAID TO HAVE SUPPLIED SECRET INFORMATION IN RETURN FOR A PROMISE OF A JOB ABROAD.

    THE FOREIGN DIPLOMAT, WHO HAD SINCE LEFT THE COUNTRY, WAS SAID TO BE AN ARMY OFFICER IN WORLD WAR TWO, AND ACCORDING TO THE INDICTMENT, WAS REGARDED AS AN AUTHORITY ON MIDDLE EAST AFFAIRS IN HIS EMBASSY, WHICH WAS NOT NAMED.

    THE TWO MEN WERE SAID TO HAVE FIRST MET IN 1948, WHEN SOUKA WAS SERVING ABROAD, WHEN THE TWO WERE BOTH IN CAIRO LATER, SOUKA WAS CLAIMED TO HAVE HANDED OVER "TOP SECRET" POLITICAL REPORTS ABOUT INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS AND FOREIGN MINISTRY ACTIVITIES.
