  • Description

Members of the Japanese House of Representatives visited the Bristol factories of Rolls-Royce Bristol Engine Division yesterday (June 8) They were accompanied by senior executives of Japanese Air Lines, one of the first customers of the Concorde supersonic airliner, which is powered by Rolls-Royce Bristol Olympus 593 turbojets.

After a morning's inspection of the Concorde's development and production at the Filton Division of Bristol Aircraft Corporation, the party then visited the Bristol Engine Division where they were shown construction of the Olympus 593 turbo-jets. They also saw the engines being run under test conditions on the ground.

The Rolls-Royce factory at Bristol, which employs 15.000, is responsible for four major projects in the company's aero-engine programme. These are Olympus 593 for Concorde, the Pegasus engine for Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the Viper series of turbo-jets and the M 45H series for short haul aircraft.
