    In Ghana, five people -- including two former leading members of the late Dr. Nkrumah's administration -- made their first appearance on Wednesday (17 October) before a military tribunal in Accra on charges of plotting to overthrow the government.

    Ghana's Attorney-General, Mr. E. N. Moore, told the seven-man tribunal that the conspirators, led by a former politician, Mr. Alhaji Imoru Ayarna, sought to overthrow the Government of the National Redemption Council by influencing Colonel Robert Kotei, Commander of the First Infantry Brigade of the Ghana Army, to stage a coup d'etat. The day for the coup was fixed for August 29, 1973.

    Mr. Moore said the plotters had planned to set up a Supreme Revolutionary Council (S.R.C.) to be composed of military officers embracing Ghana's major tribes. He said the S.R.C. was to be the main legislative body with an executive council to be responsible for the day-to-day government.

    The five accused include two former politicians, a former trade union officials, a journalist and an air force major.

    They have pleaded not guilty, and are being represented by counsel. The tribunal is obliged by decree to pass the death sentence o??? them, if it finds them guilty of subversion.

    SYNOPSIS: Strict security marked the opening of a military tribunal in Accra on Wednesday, at which five men faced charges of plotting to overthrow the Government of Ghana.

    The Tribunal was told by Ghana's Attorney General that the accused sought to overthrow the government of the National redemption Council, by influencing a leading Army Commander to stage a coup d'etat. The seven-man tribunal was headed by Colonel Osei Boateng.

    The five accused include two former politicians, a former trade union official, a journalist and an Air Force major. The government alleges they planned to stage the coup on the twenty-ninth of August this year.

    The men have all pleaded not guilty, and are represented by counsel. They face on obligatory death sentence, if they're found guilty of subversion.
