Background: Tennis...and Sweden's Bjorn Borg easily defeated Hans Gildemeister of Chile in the quarter finals of the French Open championships in Paris on Tuesday (5 June). Gildemeister, who wasn't expected to reach the quarter finals, lost four-six, one-six, five-seven in an uninspiring match.
SYNOPSIS: Borg, serving in the first set, saw his four-one lead reduced to five-four by Gildemeister, who's ranked forty-fifth in the world.
On the slow centre court, there was little entertainment for the crowd. But Borg, the defending champion in the French Open who celebrates his twenty-third birthday on Wednesday (6 June), had few problems in the second set. Gildemeister said afterwards that he'd worn himself out in the first set, and had little energy left for the remainder of the match.
In the final set, Gildemeister challenged Borg more effectively, evening the score at four-all. But his service was broken by the champion with surprising ease after that.
Borg said later that he'd played his best match so far in the championships, although his opponents in the earlier stages had done little to threaten the Swede's supremacy.
