  • Description

Egyptian President Anwasr Sadat announced in parliament on Monday (2 October) that peace talks between Egypt and Israel would start in Washington on October 12th.

SYNOPSIS: The announced came during a three hour speech by president Sadat to a special session of the People's Assembly, which was broadcast and televised. The President spoke to a crowded house.

The Camp David agreements specifically state that negotiations will be carried out under the auspices of the United Nations and any peace treaty negotiated will be underwritten by the UN Security Council.

Mr. Sadat, however, did not have the full support of the Assembly. Of late, a number of leftists and supporters of the later President Gamal Abdel Nasser have been critical of the Camp David accords the only Nasserite member of the Assembly, Kamel Ahmed, caused such an uproar that he was expelled.

Mr. Sadat announced that he had invited President Jimmy Carter to visit Egypt for the signing of the planned peace treaty, and Mr. Carter had accepted. During his speech, Mr. Sadat defended his peace initiative and the Camp David agreement. He said they are not, as some Arab critics maintain, a surrender.
