    INTERPRETED AS A SIGN OF CONFIDENCE IN THE KENNEDY ADMINISTRATION, ROBERT WAGNER WAS RE-ELECTED FOR A THIRD TERM AS MAYOR OF NEW YORK NOVEMBER 7. THE RETURNS INDICATED THAT THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC MAYOR HAD OUTPOLLED BOTH HIS OPPONENTS, WINNING 53 PER-CENT. OF THE VOTE.

    THE ELECTORAL CONTESTS TOOK ON NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE WHEN LEADING FIGURES IN BOTH THE REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC PARTIES ENTERED THE CAMPAIGN. PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND EX-PRESIDENT TRUMAN THREW YEAR FULL WEIGHT BEHIND MAYOR WAGNER, AND EX-PRESIDENT EISENHOWER AND GOVERNOR ROCKFELLER CAMPAIGNED FOR STATE ATTORNEY-GENERAL LOUIS J. LEFKOWITZ. THE OTHER CANDIDATE WAS CITY CONTROLLER LAWRENCE E. GEROSA OF THE INDEPENDENT CITIZEN'S PARTY.

    MAYOR WAGNER IS THE FIRST DEMOCRAT TO BE RE-ELECTED FOR THREE TERMS SINCE THE FIVE BOROUGHS CAME TOGETHER AS GREATER NEW YORK IN 1898. THE ONLY OTHER THREE-TERM MAYOR WAS FIORELLO H. LA GUARDIA, WHO SERVED FROM 1933 THROUGH TO 1945. THE TOTAL VOTE MAY HAVE GONE OVER 2,300,00, TWO-THIRDS OF THE REGISTRATION, A FIGURE THAT HAS BEEN SURPASSED ONLY ONCE IN A MAYORAL ELECTION ... IN 1949, WHEN 2,560,848 VOTES WERE CAST.
