  • Description

French and Austrian champion skiers - dominant in the big races held so far this season - met again Jan 21 in the downhill runs of the 22nd Hahnenkamm races at Kitzbuhel, Austria.

With France establishing a superiority in downhill events - against Austria's slight lead in the slalom - the Hahnenkamm event was won by Frenchman Guy Perillat. Perillat (no. 13) - the 1960 world combined champion who will be 21 next month - is acclaimed by some as the greatest Alpine skier of all time, and has already had other successes this year.

    In second place came Austria's Egon Zimmerman II (no. 14 - 2m 29.9), and third was Switzerland's Roger Staub (no. 15 - 2m 30.0).

French ski-ing successes are being attributed to the new low-crouch ski-ing position of the Frenchmen, Austria's success in the slalom is regarded as partly the result of the Austrians' short turn technique.
