  • Description

Development in the international timber industry have been under discussion by participants in a two-week seminar on Export Development and Marketing, held at the University of Ghana's School of Administration of Legon.

SYNOPSIS: The seminar was financed and presented by the Commonwealth Secretariat through the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation. During the opening speeches emphasis was laid on the development of non-traditional exports and also on the expansion of collaboration with the European Economic Community.

Professor Albert Hyndman, Director of the University of Ghana's School of Administration, was one of the speakers on the subject of timber trade development. Ghana's timber production expanded rapidly after the second world war, but sawn timber output dropped between 1965 and 1973. Since then, sawmills have been operating below capacity. Over half of Ghana's saw timber output is exported.

Another speaker was Mr. Terence Mallinson, Chairman of the Timber Research and Development Association of the United Kingdom. he said that timber exporting countries should not ban the export of logs, but rather levy a tax on them, as this would make importers more selective.
