    AN EAST GERMAN AND A JAPANESE SHIP WERE IN COLLISION IN THE THAMES IN THICK FOG TODAY (TUESDAY). TWO BRITISH TUGS SPED TO THE RESCUE AND THE CREW FROM THE EAST GERMAN SHIP - THE 9,656-TON FREIGHTER MAGDEBURG - WERE LANDED SAFELY AT TILBURY.

    THE JAPANESE SHIP, THE YAMASHIRO MARU, 10,500 TONS, WAS DAMAGED BUT WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE. THE MAGDEBURG WAS HIT AMIDSHIPS AND HEELED OVER IN THE RIVER.

    THE SHIP WAS CARRYING A CARGO OF BRITISH-BUILT BUSES TO CUBA AND SOME OF THEM WERE NEARLY KNOCKED OVERBOARD WHEN THE TWO SHIPS COLLIDED. ONE SAILOR DID GO OVER THE SIDE BUT WAS QUICKLY PICKED UP. TWO OF THE EAST GERMAN CREW WERE SLIGHTLY INJURED AND WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AT TILBURY. THE MASTER AND TWO OFFICERS STAYED ON BOARD UNTIL THE MAGDEBURG HAD BEEN BEACHED.
