  • Description

In a major re-shuffle, five new cabinet ministers were sworn in by Argentina's President Maria Estela Peron in Buenos Aires on Monday (11 August).

Together with two members of the former cabinet, and newly-commissioned Economics Minister Sen. Antonio Calfiero, they face the daunting task of restoring stability to the economically and politically wracked nation.

Local newspapers have described the new cabinet appointments as Mrs. Peron's "last ditch stand" to save her ailing 13-month-old Government They are sceptical about her chances of success.

Despite the swearing-in ceremony, guerrillas and workers were active on Monday. While guerrillas attacked a military post in the South, more than half a million Government and municipal employees in the provinces began a 24-hour strike for 150 per cent pay rises.
