Background: EIGHTY-FIVE THOUSAND PEOPLE IN THE WEMBLEY STADIUM IN LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY) SAW THE LANCASHIRE TEAM, WIDNES WIN THE BRITISH RUGBY LEAGUE CUP IN A MATCH AGAINST HULL KINGSTON ROVERS. THE CUP WAS WON BY WIDNRS FOR THE THIRD TIME BEATING THE HULL TEAM BY THIRTEEN POINTS TO FIVE.

THE GAME STARTED SLOWLY. HULL GAINED THE EARLY HONOURS BUT AS THE MATCH DEVELOPED WIDNES GRADUALLY GOT THE UPPER HAND - THANKS LARGELY TO THE WORK OF THE LAST MINUTE REPLACEMENT BILL THOMPSON, PLAYING ON THE RIGHT WING. AFTER THIRTY-FIVE MINUTES OF PLAY WIDNES OPENED THE SCORING WITH A PENALTY GOAL KICKED BY B. RANDALL. AT HALF-TIME THE SCORE WAS WIDNES 2, HULL KINGSTON ROVERS NIL.

WIDNES WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE ATTACK EARLY IN THE SECOND SPELL. IN QUICK SUCCESSION CAME A TRY BY A. BRIERS (THE CONVERSION MISSED BY RANDALL) AND ANOTHER TRY BY F. MYLER - WHICH RANDALL KICKED HOME FOR A GOAL.

HULL RESPONDED WHEN A. BURWELL SCORED A TRY AFTER TWENTY-THREE MINUTES OF THE SECOND HALF. C. KELLETT CONVERTED. BUT WIDNES CAME BACK AGAIN WITH EVEN GREATER DETERMINATION AND AFTER A MAGNIFICENT ATTACKING MOVE, COLLIER SCORED AN UNCONVERTED TRY ONLY TWO MINUTES BEFORE THE FINAL WHISTLE. THE TRY CAPPED A GREAT PERFORMANCE BY COLLIER, WHO WAS AWARDED THE LANCE TODD TROPHY FOR THE BEST PLAYER IN THE MATCH.

THE FINAL SCORE : WIDNES 13, HULL KINGSTON ROVERS 5.
