  • Description

The Cosmos soccer team of New York, one of the mightiest sides in the comparatively young North American League, arrived in Calcutta on Thursday (September 22) for the Indian leg of their international tour. Their match against the Mohun Bagan Club - was drawn two-all. But apart from the game itself, the mere presence of the team and their Brazilian star, Pele, was an attraction in itself.

SYNOPSIS: Cosmos, who've been playing in Japan and China on their tour, are aptly named. Their cosmopolitan side is made up mainly of professionals from several nations, and Pele is perhaps their biggest attraction wherever they go. In Calcutta, officials eventually escorted him away from his fans.

Cosmos, one of the most expensive soccer team in the business are also one of the best in the developing soccer world outside the established centres like Europe and Latin America. On their current tour, they beat a Japanese club side in Tokyo 4-2, and an all-Japan team three-one. They drew one-all in China against a national side. But as Pele said on Friday (23 September) the name of the game was not winning alone but happiness and love as well.
