Background: About 1,000 young Armenians and members of the National Union of Cypriot students demonstrated today (26 August) in front of the Turkish Embassy in Beirut, protesting against the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
The students carried placards condemning the invasion, and recalling the massacre of Armenians in Turkey in 1915.
The demonstrators only dispersed after a Lebanese security-man had handed their protest note to the Embassy. One marcher said this had earlier been rejected when they had tried to hand it in. The marchers also made their protest outside the United Nations office in Beirut and handed in a further note for Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, urging the U.N. to take firm action over Cyprus.
About 70 young men and women who took part in the protest later started a hunger strike outside the U.N. office.
