  • Description

Excavations of graves in the Marathon Valley of Greece -- scene of the famous battle between Persians and Athenians in classical antiquity -- have brought to light important traces of a civilisation dating back to between 2,600 and 2,000 years B.C.

The dig in the Valley a few miles to the north-east of Athens is being led by Professor Spyridon Marinatos, head of the Greek Archaeological Department.

His team has uncovered many burials which have escaped the attentions of grave-robbers over the last 4,000 years, and which give valuable information about the people and civilisation of the valley.

Grave goods from the necropolis have included pottery, vases and statuettes. Near the dead city, ruins of an important community have also been discovered.
