LAOS... AND A NEW CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE PATHET LAO. SURGING NORTH AGAIN, NEAR THE CENTRAL?

  • Description

LAOS... AND A NEW CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE PATHET LAO. SURGING NORTH AGAIN, NEAR THE CENTRAL TOWN OF THAKHET, ARE NEUTRALIST AND RIGHT-WING TROOPS, ALL HEAVILY RE-INFORCED FOLLOWING THEIR RECENT SETBACK. PATHET LAO TROOPS HAD FORCED THEM TO RETREAT ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO.

NOW, ARMED WITH MORTARS AND MACHINE-GUNS, THE NEUTRALIST AND RIGHT-WING GROUPS ARE STAGING A JOINT ATTACK; STEADILY CLOSING IN ON THEIR ENEMY POSITIONS. THE RENEWED FIGHTING COMES ONLY ONE WEEK AFTER THE INTERNATIONAL CONTROL COMMISSION VISITED THAKHET FOR AN ON-THE-SPOT INVESTIGATION.

MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION -- FROM CANADA, INDIA, AND POLAND -- HELD TALKS WITH THE RIGHT-WING LEADER, GENERAL PHOUMI NOSOVAN. AT THE TIME HE DESCRIBED THE SITUATION AS "GRAVE" -- NO LONGER A MATTER OF SMALL SKIRMISHERS
MEANWHILE THE NEUTRALIST PRIME MINISTER, PRINCE SOUVANNA PHOUMI, HAS DENIED PATHET LAO CHARGES THAT HIS AND RIGHT-WING TROOPS LAUNCHED ARTILLERY BARRAGES AGAINST CIVILIAN POPULATIONS ON PATHET LAO TOWNS. THE TOWNS ALLEGEDLY ATTACKED WERE NAMED S KHANGKHAY ON THE PLAIN OF JARS, A PATHET LAO HEADQUARTERS, PLUS PHONSEVAN AND LAOTHOUANS.

REPORTS FROM BANGKOK SAY THAT NEARLY 100 LAOTIAN MINOR OFFICIALS AND THEIR RELATIVES HAVE RECENTLY CROSSED THE BORDER INTO THAILAND AS REFUGEES FROM THE FIGHTING. THAILAND WAS EXPECTED TO CONTACT THE LAOTIAN GOVERNMENT TO ARRANGE THEIR REPATRIATION.
