Several hundred demonstrators marched through Nairobi streets on Friday (7 June) to draw attention to World Environment Day. The marchers -- mainly from non-governmental organisations, and many of them young people -- carried placards proclaiming the need for the protection of the environment.
As well as the symbolic, there was a practical side to the demonstration. The environmentalists, flanked by garbage carts, picked up all the litter in their path through Haile Selassie Avenue, Government Road and City Hall Way to the Kenyatta conference Centre.
At the Centre, the demonstrators were met by the Mayor of Nairobi, Miss Margaret Kenyatta, daughter of President Jomo Kenyatta. Miss Kenyatta urged the citizens of Nairobi to re-dedicate themselves to the goals set out at the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Environment. She said the City Council considered it a challenge to set high standards for preservation of the environment.
