  • Description

White rule in Rhodesia could end by December 31st this year under an historic agreement signed in the capital, Salisbury, on Friday (3 March). The settlement. signed by the Prime Minister Mr. Ian Smith and three nationalist leaders, is the outcome of long weeks of talking. It sets the scene for the formation of a transitional government, with a small black majority designed to lead the country to one-man, one-vote elections and the creation of a new, black-ruled nation called Zimbabwe. The transitional government faces many daunting tasks, including negotiating a cease-fire in the five-fire in the five-year-old guerrilla war. The Patriotic Front led by Mr. Joshua Nkomo and Mr. Robert Mugabe, which took no part in the Salisbury talks or agreement, has already described the settlement as a "prescription for further bloodshed" and said it will not even discuss it unless Britain first approves the settlement.

SYNOPSIS: The agreement was signed by Mr. Smith, Bishop Abel Muzorewa, who donned tribal robes for the occasion, the Reverend Ndabaningi Sithole and Chief Jeremiah Chirau in a short ceremony in a suburban Salisbury mansion.
