  • Description

THE HIGH HIRING FEES OF CHINESE-OWNED TRICYCLE PEDICABS, LAST WEEK MET WITH STRONG PROTEST IN DJAKARTA BY SOME 200 INDONESIAN DRIVERS. KNOWN LOCALLY AS BETJAS (PRONOUNCED BAY CHARS), THESE VEHICLES ARE HIRED BY THE DRIVERS FOR 12 HOURS AT A FEE OF EIGHT TO 12 RUPIAHS.

THIS FEE MUST COME FROM A DRIVER'S AVERAGE DAILY TAKINGS TOTALLING LESS THAN 20 RUPIAHS. IT LEAVES THE DRIVER A PROFIT SUFFICIENT TO BUY ABOUT TWO LITRES OF RICE OR TWO PACKETS OF INFERIOR LOCALLY-MADE CIGARETTES.

A MEMBER OF THE INDONESIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ACTION COMMAND, KAMI, ADDRESSED THE DEMONSTRATORS AND URGED THEM TO CONTINUE THEIR STRUGGLE AND PLEDGED KAMI'S SUPPORT.

IN THE DEMONSTRATION, THE DRIVERS DEFLATED THEIR TYRES IN A SYMBOLIC PROTEST, THEN MARCHED TO THE HOME OF FELLOW DRIVERS AND FORMED A BETJA DRIVERS ACTION FRONT CALLED K.A.T.B.I.

THE BETJARS ARE COMMON FORM OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR SHORT DISTANCES IN MOST ASIAN COUNTRIES. THEY ARE GREAT TOURIST ATTRACTION.
