    A CROSS-COUNTRY RACE WITH A DIFFERENCE TOOK PLACE TODAY (SUNDAY) AT GILWELL PARK, CHINGFORD. IT WAS THE NELL GWYNN TROPHY SEDAN CHAIR RALLY, AND COMPETITORS WERE BOY SCOUTS AND GIRL GUIDES.

    ABOUT 60 TEAMS TOOK PART IN THE RACE. EACH TEAM COMPRISED THREE TO SEVEN SCOUTS, GUIDES, OR A QUOTA OF BOTH. THEIR JOB WAS TO TRANSPORT A PASSENGER IN A SEDAN CHAIR OF THEIR OWN MAKING AND DESIGN OVER A RUGGED THREE-MILE (FIVE-KILOMETRE) COURSE OF ROADS, FOOT PATHS AND GRASSLANDS.

    THERE WERE PRIZES NOT ONLY FOR WINNER BUT ALSO THOSE TEAMS THAT DESIGNED THE BEST SEDAN, FIELDED THE BEST-DRESSED MEMBERS AND SUPPLIED THE MOST COMICAL ENTRY.
