  • Description

IN NDOLA, ZAMBIA, MOTORISTS QUEUED OUTSIDE GARAGES LAST THURSDAY (1ST. FEBRUARY) HOPING FOR SUPPLIES OF PETROL UNDER THE RATIONING SCHEME MADE NECESSARY BY THE COUNTRY'S SEVERE FUEL CRISIS. FOLLOWING BREAKDOWNS OF SUPPLY ALONG THE WATERLOGGED ROUTE FROM THE EAST COAST PORTS INTO ZAMBIA, THE FEBRUARY PETROL RATION WAS SLASHED TO FIVE GALLONS FOR THE PRIVATE MOTORIST; PRIORITY USERS WERE PROMISED ONE GALLON IMMEDIATELY ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH, BUT MANY GARAGES WERE UNABLE TO HONOUR THIS RATION.

THE GREAT NORTH ROAD FROM THE EAST COAST PORTS - ESPECIALLY THE STRETCH IN SOUTHERN TANZANIA KNOWN AS "HELL RUN" - BECAME IMPASSABLE TO PETROL TANKERS AFTER THE WETTEST JANUARY FOR 30 YEARS, DURING WHICH RAINFALLS ARE SAID TO HAVE BEEN SEVEN TIMES HEAVIER THAN USUAL. A MILE-LONG STRETCH HAD TO BE CLOSED DURING THE PRECEDING WEEK TO ALLOW THE BUILDING OF A NEW BY-PASS.

THE ZAMBIA GOVERNMENT HAS APPEALED FOR THE UTMOST ECONOMY IN THE USE OF FUEL.
