  • Description

As the result of a new regulation posted by Britain's Defence Secretary, Lord Carrington, on Friday night (12th March) British troops under the age of 18 are to be withdrawn from duty in Northern Ireland. This follows the murder of three off-duty soldiers....one aged 17....who were shot through the ??? on the ??? outskirts of Belfast on Wednesday.

Yesterday (Saturday 13th March) young members of the Royal Highland Fusiliers were waiting on board H.M.S. "Maidstone"....their floating barracks in Belfast.....for word of their return to Scotland. Since the murders, the young soldiers have had to remain in the barracks during off-duty hours....the Army being clearly unwilling to risk any similar incident involving young recruits. Company Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel David Anderson, is interviewed in this film coverage about the recruits' reaction to the new regulation. It had earlier been reported that the young men felt they were being treated like children.
