  • Description

THE DIVISION OF SPACE MEDICINE AT THE U.S. AIR FORCE'S SCHOOL OF AVIATION MEDICINE AT RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, TEXAS (place - source), HAS, FOR THE PAST DECADE, CARRIED FORWARD SOME OF THE MOST ADVANCED MEDICAL RESEARCH IN THE HISTORY OF AVIATION.

INITIAL WORK INVOLVED SUCH BASICS AS DEFINING "SPACE" AND OUT LINING THE AREA IN WHICH SPACE AND THE ATMOSPHERE OVERLAP. LATER, THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE HUMAN BODY IN SPACE OR NEAR SPACE WERE MADE AND IN TURN GENERATED A VAST, INCREDIBLY COMPLEX AND LONG-RANGE FIELD OF SCIENTIFIC ENDEAVOUR. HERE THE WORLD'S FIRST "SPACE CABIN" OR SEALED CABIN SIMULATOR, WAS CREATED AND USED TO STUDY MAN'S TOLERANCE TO ISOLATION, CONFINEMENT ARTIFICIAL DAY-NIGHT CYCLES AND TO ATMOSPHERIC CHANGE.

THE FIRST SERIOUS STUDIES IN AMERICA OF THE EFFECTS ON MAN OF ZERO-GRAVITY, OR "WEIGHTLESSNESS" WERE UNDERTAKEN AND ARE STILL GOING ON. THEY HAVE PRODUCED DATA, WHICH INDICATES THAT MAN CAN ADAPT FAIRLY READILY TO SHORT PERIODS OF "WEIGHTLESSNESS."
LONG BEFORE SCIENCE KNEW OF THE DENSE RADIATION BELTS SURROUNDING OUR PLANT, DEPARTMENT OF SPACE MEDICINE SCIENTISTS WERE STUDYING THE EXTENT AND NATURE OF HAZARDS, WHICH MIGHT BE POSED BY RADIATION, METEORS AND COSMIC RAYS IN OUTER SPACE AND WERE PROBING THE POSSIBILITY OF DANGEROUS RADIATION FROM POWER AND PROPULSION SOURCE IN FUTURE SPACE CRAFT.

A RESEARCH PROJECT AIMED AT DETERMINING WHAT SORT OF LIFE MIGHT SURVIVE THE HOSTILE ATMOSPHERE OF MARS WAS ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT "FIRST". SCHOOL MICROBIOLOGISTS HAVE FOUND THAT CERTAIN BACTERIA, IN SEALED JARS, CAN SURVIVE SIMULATED MARTIAN CONDITIONS.
