  • Description

A SMALL GREEK VILLAGE ... IN CYPRUS, WERE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) A NEW BLOODBATH SEEMED IMMINENT. IT WAS AT THE VILLAGE OF KARMI, SMALL AND HARMLESS LOOKING ENOUGH UNTIL ARMED MEN SPOTTED AROUND THE OUTSKIRTS. GREEK CYPRIOTS RAN OUT HUNT FOR THEM AND AGAIN IT WAS THE SAME STORY ... OF BRITISH TROOPS CALLED IN TO TRY AND KEEP THE PEACE.

IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT, THE WOMEN, THE WOMEN OF THE VILLAGE TOOK UP ARMS TOO AND IT SEEMED PASSIONS WERE SETS FOR A RUNNING GUN BATTLE AS THE GREEK VILLAGES FACED THE ALMOST UNSEEN ENEMY ... THE TURKS OF A NEIGHBOURING COMMUNITY.

THE LOCAL GREEKS AFTER SOME HOURS AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF BRITISH COVER FINALLY EASED THE TURKS FROM THEIR POSITIONS AND THE VILLAGE CHILDREN WHO HAD BEEN ALMOST IN THE FRONT LINE IN THEIR SCHOOL WERE ALLOWED OUT AFTER FIVE INSECURE HOURS.

WITH DANGER AVERTED ONCE AGAIN, A VILLAGE TAKES UP ITS DAILY DUTIES, BUT THOUGH THE ARMY ARE OUT OF SIGHT, THEY ARE KEPT HANDY. AND BRITISH TROOPS, UNTIL THE PROPOSED UNITED NATIONS TROOPS ARRIVE, REMAIN ON DUTY.
