    POLICE AND OTHER AUTHORITIES IN PARIS HAVE BEEN ALERTED TO THE DANGER OF FLOODS AS THE SEINE CONTINUES TO RISE. IN CENTRAL PARIS IT WAS ABOUT 15 FEET (4.8 METRES) HIGHER THAN NORMAL ON MONDAY (23 FEB.) AND THERE HAS BEEN WIDESPREAD FLOODING IN THE SUBURBS.

    THERE HAVE ALSO BEEN FLOOD WARNINGS IN OTHER PARTS OF EASTERN FRANCE AS CONTINUED HEAVY RAIN AND SUDDEN THAW SENT SWOLLEN RIVERS OVER THEIR BANKS.

    PARIS-MILAN AND PARIS-FLORENCE TRAINS WERE REROUTED THROUGH GENEVA AFTER SODDEN GROUND COLLAPSED UNDER A TRACK AT MONTBARREY. ROADS WERE CUT AROUND DIJON, BESANCON, AND NANCY.

    THE SITUATION IS THE SAME IN MUCH OF WEST GERMANY WITH THE MOSELLE, LAHN, AND PARTS OF THE RHINE RISING SEVERAL METRES (FEET) ABOVE NORMAL.

    ONE OF THE WORST HIT AREAS IS IN NORTH BAVARIA WHERE FIVE PEOPLE WERE FEARED DROWNED ON MONDAY (23 FEB.).
