Background: The European motorcycle racing reached and exciting climax in Holland on September 12. Two Britons, Mick Barton and passenger Nick Cutmore, riding a Yamaha, came third in the final round of the European Sidecar Championship, earning the points to carry off the European title. British teams also finished second, third and fourth in the championship. Second place went to Steve Abbott and Sean Smith, who finished second in the final race behind Dutch pair, Egbert Streuer and Bernard Schneiders. Barton is a dustman (garbage collector) for the inner London council of Lambeth. He took paid time off to compete in Assen before a crowd of 20,000.
