  • Description

President Tito of Yugoslavia has warned in his New Year's speech that the non-aligned nations must show solidarity among themselves.

SYNOPSIS: President Tito was speaking at his holiday retreat on the island of Brioni. President Tito has long been an advocate and a practitioner of Communism practised outside the monolithic grouping of the Iron Curtain countries. This has led to Third World Countries seeking the support of Yugoslavia in their endeavours to bolster their sovereignty and still maintain independent sources of aid. Yugoslavia has done this ever since the end of World War Two.

When President Tito called for unity among the 86 member nations of the non-aligned movement, he said it was a thorn in the side of some people who wanted to split countries into what he termed "so-called progressive and non-progressive states."
President Tito is regarded as the founding father of the non-aligned movement. He did not elaborate in his New Year message on a statement issued earlier, concerning the need for unity. His remarks were felt to refer to the meeting of non-aligned countries held in Belgrade in the last northern summer when Cuba and other Soviet-backed states were accused by some members of trying to split the movement.

It was only three days earlier that President Tito had said that Yugoslavia would continue its independent role and non-aligned foreign policy. The task for the coming year ahead would be the stabilisation of the economy. But, President Tito said, there would be equal respect for all countries, regardless of size.
