President Pompidou--who becomes the world's first "supersonic statesman" in a civil airliner--later pledged that, despite rising costs on the Concorde project, France would carry on with it.

SYNOPSIS: The Anglo-French supersonic airliners, Concordes 001 and 002, were back in the news again on Friday after several months out of the headlines, when the two prototypes logged up several months out of the headlines, when the two prototypes logged up several "first" in a day of world-wide publicity. In France, President !,X]d Pompidou became the first "supersonic statesman" in a civil airliner when he took off from Le Bourget in Paris for a flight at twice the speed of sound to Toulouse, where the two Concordes--British and French--met for the first time, Toulouse, in the South of France, is where French Concorde 001 was built.

Piloted by France's number one test pilot. Andre Turcat, the French prototype took its VIP passenger on a seventy-five minute flight over the northern coast and the English Channel to Brittany, where it reached twice the speed of sound--that's Mach Two, thirteen hundred miles per hour (2,080 kilometres per hour).

Then, after crossing the Bay of Biscay and establishing the President as the fastest politician in the world, 001 landed at Toulouse to meet 002 for the first time. The President's flight, in which he eat in a specially-installed passenger seat, was seen by news agencies as an effort to boost Concorde both nationally and internationally.

And indeed, after landing and embracing pilot Andre Turcat, the President made a short speech in which he pledged that, despite the already high and still rising cost, France would carry on with Concorde. Already on the tarmac at Toulouse was 001.s twin--the British-built 002. It was a momentous first meeting for the two airliners--only marred when 002, on its return flight to England, was forced to turn back and land at Paris airport with a landing-gear fault. Despite this, the day still belonged to the two Concordes--pride of the Anglo-French aircraft industries.
