    TEN SEAMEN ARE FEARED DEAD IN A NORTH AMERICAN GREAT LAKES SHIP COLLISION INVOLVING THE UNITED STATES LIMESTONE CARRIER 'CEDARVILLE' AND THE NORWEGIAN FREIGHTER 'TOPDALSFJORD'....THE INCIDENT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) IN THE FOG-SHROUDED STRAITS OF MACKINAC. THE 'TOPDALSFJORD' IS NOT REPORTED TO BE IN ANY DANGER, THE 'CEDARVILLE' HAS SUNK.

    THE COLLISION TOOK PLACE NOT FAR FROM THE FAMOUS MACKINAC BRIDGE. ACCORDING TO THE COAST GUARD, THE CREW OF THE 'CEDARVILLE' DID NOT SEE THE 'TOPDALSFJORD' UNTIL MOMENTS BEFORE THE IMPACT. A FEW SECONDS LATER, THE 'CEDARVILLE' ROLLED OVER ON HER SIDE, TOSSING THE CREW INTO THE ICY WATER. TWENTY-FIVE WERE PICKED UP BY A PASSING GERMAN FREIGHTER, THE 'WEISSENBURG' AND TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL IN CHERBOYGAN, UPPER MICHIGAN. THREE MEMBERS OF THE 'CEDARVILLE'S' CREW ARE DEAD AND EIGHT MISSING, PRESUMED DEAD.

    THE 'TOPDALSFJORD' SUFFERED CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO HER BOWS, BUT WAS ABLE TO PROCEED UNDER HER OWN STEAM. THE 'CEDARVILLE' SANK ABOUT 25-MINUTES AFTER THE COLLISION.
