SYNOPSIS: The Sixth World Conference on Deafness opened in Paris on Monday, with Professor Pierre Mounier-Kuhn, leader of the French team to the talks, giving an address on the importance of the early discovery of deafness symptoms.

The Professor, whose speech was translated to deaf delegates by sign-language interpreters, outlined the various causes of deafness in children -- hereditary factors, childhood diseases like measles and mumps, German measles contracted by the mother during pregnancy, and the effects of some drugs on pregnant mothers. In addition, he said, difficult child births sometimes caused deafness if there was a temporary halt in the child's breathing. The conference attended by delegates from several countries, is aimed primarily at solving and easing problems facing deaf people in their daily lives.
