Background: A 32-year-old Roman Catholic bookmaker was killed in Belfast on Thursday (15 March) when a bomb, disguised as a parcel, left on the doorstep of his house, exploded.

Mr. Larry McMahon, who owns 20 betting shops and a hotel, and the father of four young children, answered a knock at his door and found a parcel on the step. He called to his wife to stand clear, that something was wrong.

The bomb exploded, ripping down the front of the house and killing Mr. McMahon. His wife and children suffered shock.

An hour later, a hotel in nearby Whitehead -- also owned by Mr. McMahon, was burnt to the ground when an incendiary bomb exploded. The explosion injured a 66-year-old barman.
