Background: Jimmy Connors of the United States beat fellow-countryman Arthur Ashe on Monday (26 November) to win the man's singles final of the south African Open Tennis Tournament. Connors defeated Ashe 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 at the Ellis Park Courts in Johannesburg.
Ashe, who is Balck, waited four years for permission to play in the South African Tournament -- one of the world's top six tournaments. It's believed his criticism of South Africa's racial policies lay behind earlier Government refusals to grant him a visa.
Connors, who is 21, picked up a prize of GBP2,900 (about 7,000 U.S. dollars) for his win against the 30-year-old Ashe. The game was largely one-sided. Ashe played some fine shots, but Connors was in an uncompromising mood. Ashe opened confidently, but it was not long before Connor's exuberant play began to count. Connors swept through the first ???et and quickly established a lead in the second by breaking Ashe's service.
