  • Description

THE COMMON MARKET'S COUNCIL OF MI??? HAD REPORTEDLY DECIDED ON A PROCEDURE THAT NIGHT LEAD TO A SOLUTION OF THE "CHICKEN WAR" - IF IT'S ACCEPTABLE TO THE UNITED STATES.

AT ITS MEETING ON BRUSSELS TODAY (THURSDAY), THE COUNCIL INSTRUCTED A WORKING GROUP TO DRAW UP A REQUEST TO GATT (GENERAL AGREEMENT ON TARIFFS AND TRADE) FOR AN OPINION OF THE AMOUNT OF TRADE LOST BY AMERICA AS A RESULT OF THE SIR'S POULTRY REGULATIONS.

REPORTS SAY THAN SUCH AN OPINION FROM GATT WOULD SHOW WHAT TARIFF COMPENSATIONS THE AMERICANS WOULD BE ENTITLED TO AS A RESULT OF LOOSES IN THE GERMAN POULTRY MARKET.

M.JEAN RE'S MEMBER OF THE E.E.C COMMISSION RESPONSIBLE FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, IS DUE TO PRESENT THE COUNCIL'S OFFER TO MR. JOHN TUTHILL, U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES, TOMORROW.

(AT PRESENT, THE U.S. CLAIMS IT HAS LOST 46 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF TRADE - MAINLY IN THE GERMAN MARKET - BECAUSE OF THE EUROHART'S POULTRY REGULATIONS. THE SIX CLAIM THAT THE LOSS OF TRADE AMOUNTS TO ONLY 19 MILLION DOLLARS.)
(THE U.S. GOVERNMENT IS NOT EXPECTED TO MAKE SHOWN ITS OFFICIAL POSITION UNTIL AFTER THE OFFER HAS BEEN FORMALLY COMMUNICATED TO MR. TUTHILL.
