  • Description

The Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, on Saturday (4 January) strongly defended the work and money being spent on the forthcoming World Black and African Festival off Arts - and on Nigerian arts and culture in general. The General was speaking at the finale of the Nigerian Festival of Arts and Culture, which began at the National Stadium, Lagos, on 28 December.

General Gowon said although different parts of the country exhibited their own unique dances and artwork, there were ingredients common to all. And these were the basis of the Nigerian national identity.

The Festival of Arts and Culture included examples of Nigerian craft, drama, dancing and films.

The world festival will be held in Lagos in November. Already a town to house the festival participants is springing up on the outskirts of the city. The new town, with its 11,000 housing units, should be completed two months before the world-wide festival is due to start.
