  • Description

The seventh ordinary session of the ministerial council of the Organisation of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) opened in Kuwait on Saturday (June 5) with its major concern not on the official agenda.

French oil companies have called for a world boycott of Algerian crude oil following nationalization of French producing interests in Algeria earlier this year.

The eight Arab countries who comprise OAPEC (Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait, Libya, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia) will, according to Algerian oil and finance minister Abdel-Raman Salem Al-Atiqi, stand united to resist French pressure.

Topics listed on the official agenda include:
a-- The founding of an Arab oil tanker company.

b-- A project establishing a dry basin for the production of ships.

    c-- A petroleum services project.

d-- An Arab financial organisation project.

The closing session of the three-day conference is scheduled for Monday (June 7). No official comment on the Franco-Algerian dispute was expected.
