  • Description

The Organization of American States voted early Friday morning (30 April) to call a special meeting Saturday of the foreign ministers of member countries to consider the situation in the Dominican Republic.

The O.A.S. resolution, sponsored by Chile, called for a consultation of the ministers to take up what was termed "the serious situation created by the armed strife in the Dominican Republic".

The vote was 18 to 1, with Uruguay opposed and the Dominican Republic abstaining.

The O.A.S. council sent a message to the Papal Nuncio in Santo Domingo, Monsignor Emmanuel Clarizio, asking for a report on the situation and on the chance of arranging a cease-fire.

Many of the delegates at the meeting were said to have expressed doubts over the legality of the U.S. decision to send troops to the Dominican Republic. However, they joined in the search for collective measures to end the fighting.
