IT WAS PART OF A NATION-WIDE MOVEMENT OF PROTEST AGAINST PAYING TAXES, PART OF WHICH GO FOR MILITARY EXPENDITURES. THE DEMONSTRATORS PICKED ON APRIL 15 AS IT WAS THE LAST DAY FOR SENDING IN INCOME TAX DECLARATIONS. SPEAKERS URGED THE CROWD TO WITHHOLD PART OF THEIR TAXES WHEN THEY SEND IN RETURNS.

THE NEW YORK RALLY WAS TERMED THE "BOSTON TEA PARTY 1970" TO SYMBOLISE THE ANTI-WAR PROTESTERS' TAX COMPLAINTS. IN THE ORIGINAL BOSTON TEA PARTY, AMERICAN COLONISTS DUMPED TEA IN BOSTON HARBOUR TO PROTEST BRITISH TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION.

AFTER THE BURNING CEREMONY AT BATTERY PARK, THE DEMONSTRATORS NOW 10,000 STRONG MARCHED TO THE NEW YORK HEADQUARTERS OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE.
